This bureaux bookcase was commissioned as a
birthday present. It is a classic piece in every detail. All
inner construction, drawer linings, backs and carcase work are in oak
with mahogany facings. Fine curl-grain mahogany veneers front the
drawers and bureaux slope; drawer fronts, slope and drawers are
cross-banded in rosewood with boxwood stringing; brassware is cast from period examples, and
the astragal bars are glazed with hand blown glass.
The interior of the bureaux is fitted with
drawers, compartments and a cupboard in the traditional manner, the
small drawer knobs are in antique ivory. The interior includes a
large number of secret compartments.
The current cost of a similar piece would
be in the region of £12000 to £15,000, dependant on the number and nature
of the secret compartments. |
