WILL OF GUY DOBYNS 1544
In the name of God and in the year of our Lord God an thousand five hundred
forty and four and the 20th day June, I Guy Dobyns of the parish of Newent
whole of body and of mind do make my testament in this manner of ways.
First I bequeath my soul to Almighty God and to all the holy company of
heaven and my body to be at the pleasure of Almighty God
First I bequeath to Catherine my wife if god do his will and send for me in
this journey, my houses in the town of Newent and also the inclosure?
Of Modyders? and Bekes? Meadow
And after the decease of Richard come, do she to have the profit of houses?
until that my son John Dobyns the younger be of the age of one and twenty
years. And the foresaid John to enjoy foresaid land during the years in the
indenture expressed.
And if the foresaid John do die without issue of his body lawfully begotten
and then I will it to remain to my son Alexander, and for default of issue
him unto my son Robert, and for lack of issue of him unto my son James and
to his heirs? lawfully begotten, and for lack of issue of the foresaid
children above named then to remain to my son William and to his assigns during the years.
Also I will the foresaid Catherine my wife do require and keep all manner of
reparations mindful and expedient upon pain of forfeit out? of her estate.
Also I give and bequeath to my son William Dobyns to find him at grammar scole (school) £8.
Also I give to Thomas Dobyns and Guy Dobyns £10 a piece if they will be ordered by their
friends.
Item. I bequeath to younger John the sum of £10 sterling and also an fallow heiffer.
Also I bequeath to my son Robert and to my sons James and Alexander between
then in even portion the sum of £20 sterling. and if god do his will by
the one of the foresaid, this his part to remain to the other two, and for
lack of lawful issue of the second son the foresaid sum to remain unto the
foresaid third son. And for lack of issue of these? to use? in? betwixt my other children.
Also I bequeath my daughter Jane the sum of 20 marks her chamber and her arrays.
Also I bequeath to Catherine my wife a hundred sheep six oxen and four kine
and all my crops on the ground now growing. The rest of my sheep I will
that she have to discharge my debts.
And also horses colts mares and swine and implements of household and all
other cattle saving the two kine and two horses the which I gave to Robert
Dobyns and James my sons.
Also if god do his godly will by me, I will the foresaid cattle to be
delivered immediately after my decease unto the use and profit of my foresaid children.
Also I will that the forenamed Catherine my wife have the foresaid two
houses and the land of Modyders? as long as she keepeth herself widow and if
she do marry I will that Alexander my son have the houses in the town of
Newent and the the meadow called Becks? with an enclosure called Modyders?
And upon this I do ordain and make Alexander Dobyns and Wat Turner? and also
Richard Cross my lawful executors and Catherine my wife jointly with them to
see this my will fulfilled and they to have 3s and four pence apiece for their pains taken by them.
And I will also William Huntly? Christopher Hake? John Cowr? Roger Dobyns
in? other money? apiece 6s 8d sealed the 20th day of June in the 36th year
of the reign of our sov. Lord Henry the eighth
